Carey was married to BG James Johnston Pettigrew's brother, Charles Lockhart Pettigrew. They were second cousins. Carey and Charles had 8 children and lived at Bonarva Plantation on Lake Phelps. Carey, Charles and his sister Mary Blount Pettigrew Brown(e) are all 3 buried at Pettigrew Family Cemetery with no headstones. After the Civil War, the family was too poor to afford them.
