After John Henderson Davis' death in 1885, all that was left behind was the old homeplace east of Thayer and the eldest son, Charles Luther, accepted the responsibility of taking care of his sibs and holding the family together in the home. The Davis, Kirby and Wooldridge kin had lived close by each other for many years and had married into each family.

Before they relocated the turn off into the cemetery off Hwy 142, the road used to turn off at an older 2 story house which was built by John Henderson Davis who sprung from Chas Crow. The Davis Cemetery was started on land which was donated from the Davis acreage. Later, after John passed away, his eldest son Chas Luther took over the care and rearing of the children. He was later a deputy sherriff in Oregon County and later the sheriff. He died fairly young from TB but before he died, he deeded sufficient land adjacent to the cemetery for the non denominational church to be built. The church was later built and two of his younger brothers were deacons there, Benjamin Franklin and James Alexander . It was "the done thing" for everyone to meet there in August for a dinner on the grounds. There used to be large crowds of people, kin of those buried there, from southern MO and northern AR who attended and everyone had to bring something to eat. by Larry Wyatt
