Lula Belle Olney was the daughter of rancher, feudist and outlaw, Joseph Graves Olney (alias Joe Hill) and his wife Agnes 'Jane' Arnold. She had four brothers, Benjamin, Joseph, William, and Clant.

Lula was a child of about two when her father fled Texas for New Mexico, and about 4 or 5 when they arrived in Arizona.

On April 28, 1896, Lula married John J. Rath in Solomonville (now Solomon), Arizona. Rath was a businessman, miner, railroad agent, postmaster, and owner of the Rath/Cochise Hotel. In 1900, Lula employed Katherine (Horony) Cummings, aka "Big Nose Kate" to work at the hotel. Katherine had been the common-law wife of Doc Holliday until his death in 1887.

Lula and John became the parents of three daughters; Edith, Lillian, and Agnes. (The 1910 census indicates that a fourth child was born to Lula and John during their marriage, which did not survive.)

On September 7, 1905, Lula's husband was killed instantly by the accidental discharge of his shotgun. He was laid to rest in the Olney family plot at the Desert Rest Cemetery in Bowie. John J. Rath is known today as the "Father of Cochise, Arizona".

Following the death of her husband, Lula moved to Globe with her daughters where she stayed with her brother William over the next two years. She returned to Cochise in 1907. By 1909, probate was finalized on her husband's estate.

On June 15, 1910, Lula married Charles A. Cornell in Tombstone. Charles brought two children to the marriage, Melvin and Mildred. In 1912, Lula and Charles welcomed a son, Charles Olney Cornell.

In 1913, Lula, Charles, and their six children moved to California. In the 1920 census, Charles is employed as a real estate broker in Kern County.

Lula died in Fresno on July 17, 1966 at the age of 92. She is buried in Belmont Memorial Park.
