ORLAND - S. Wayne Ames, 68, died unexpectedly Thanksgiving evening, Nov. 25, 2010, at his home. He was the oldest of three children born to Stanley O. and Beatrice D. (McCready) Ames. Wayne was raised in Marblehead, Mass., where he graduated from high school in the Class of 1960. He worked as an auto mechanic in Marblehead, Mass., and honorably served in the Massachusetts National Guard. Wayne married his first wife, Clemence (Sullivan), in 1966. Wayne and Clem moved their family to East Orland in 1966, and serving together as an inseparable team, they were very active in the community for more than 30 years. After Clem's death Wayne eventually remarried to Penny-Jo Smith, and together they were very active in Orland Historical Society. Penny-Jo predeceased Wayne in September 2005. Wayne was employed by the Department of Transportation, Orland, and later appointed as district superintendent in Ellsworth. He retired from that position after years of service. Wayne was the third generation of Ames Blueberry Farm, providing many young people with their first work experience. At the time of his passing, Wayne continued to serve the Orland community as a selectman, a title he held for more than 40 years. Following in his father's and grandfather's history, Wayne earned his 33rd Masonic degree in Orland Order of the Rising Sun Lodge. Wayne also served on the board of Bucksport Health Center. Wayne had immense pride and loyalty to his family, friends and community. Wayne is survived by his daughter, Linda and her husband, Joe Leach; daughter, Nancy and her husband, Jerry Cyr; son, Goody and his wife, Colleen; son, Scott and his wife, Terry, all of East Orland; 15 grandchildren, 18 1/2 great-grandchildren; a brother, Mark and his wife, Karen, of Pembroke, Mass.; a sister, Marilyn, and her husband, Nick Freeman; and one very special nephew, Matthew Freeman, of Marblehead, Mass.
