Helen Katherine O'Brien was born October 6, 1915 in Pocahontas, Iowa to Fred and Emma (Herrman) Barnhardt. Helen grew up and attended school in Big Stone City, South Dakota.

In April of 1942, she was united in marriage to Richard O'Brien in Sisseton, South Dakota. He passed away November 3, 1976. Following her marriage, she resided in New Effington, South Dakota for eight years, Rapid City, South Dakota for 36 years and Ortonville, Minnesota.

During her lifetime, Helen was a member of St. Isaac Jogues in Rapid City and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in New Effington. Before her retirement in 1985, Helen worked as a nursing assistant for 10 years.

Helen passed away April 2, 1996 at Northridge Residence in Ortonville

Mrs. O'Brien is survived by four daughters, Renee, Colleen, Marjorie and Kathryn; one son, Patrick; one brother, Leo; one sister, Lena Gagnon; 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Helen is preceded in death by her husband, parents and three brothers.

Services were held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in New Effington.
