He and his twin brother were born in Canada. The family immigrated to the U.S. on September 21, 1907. He graduated from Wallace (Idaho) High School in 1926 and then moved to Los Angeles where he worked a number of jobs. He attempted to homestead land in Riverside county, with two other friends, but they withdrew the application after a water rights dispute with another landowner. Paul completed his law degree and then got a job at Union Hardware and Metal company where he worked his way up to Assistant Treasurer. He met Louise Shaffer in 1950 at the Colonial Ballroom in Los Angeles. On January 15, 1960, Union Hardware abruptly sold all of its assets to Brunswick Co., which closed Union Hardware and laid off its employees. His family moved to the San Fernando Valley, settling in Canoga Park, where he became a real estate broker.
