Darlene Alexander, 95, of Winterset died Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at the HCI Hospice Kavanagh House in Des Moines.

A memorial gathering will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., June 2, with a graveside service to follow at 3:00 p.m. in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society and online condolences can be left at ochiltree.com.

Darlene Mardelle Alexander, daughter of Louie and Vira (Gillham) Harsh, was born July 31, 1922, in Greenfield, Adair County, Iowa. She attended school in Adair County. Darlene was united in marriage with Joseph Alexander in 1969. Darlene worked most of her life as a talented seamstress off the square in Winterset.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Greenfield, the VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary both of Winterset. Even in her free time she sewed and crocheted. Darlene and Joe loved to dance and would do so even without music. The couple loved camping every year during the Iowa State Fair. Above all else, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend who cherished the time spent with her family and friends.

Darlene is survived by four children, Nancy Gunter of Cartersville, GA; Norman “Butch” (Charlotte) Gordon of Winterset; Kathy (Tom) Hamilton Dix of Fairway, MO; Dixie (Lynn) Holt of Winterset; ten grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; great-great-great grandchildren; extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louie and Vira Harsh; husband; Joe Alexander; son, Larry Gordon; daughter, Connie Vierling; and a sister, Norma Bickford.
