Our family has lost a dear, gentle and kind person.

Nellie Mae Thomas died on July 5, 2005, in Billings. She was born in Antelope County, near Elgin, Neb., on Dec. 26, 1917, to Orville and Martha Matson Armstrong.

In the fall of 1931 she began her high school education at Park Center Rural High School and rode a saddle horse to school. She loved horses.

Her junior and senior years were spent in Elgin, where she boarded as there were no school buses.

In 1935, she and her sister, Ruth, came to Cody, Wyo., to seek employment. She cooked on the Emil R. Hague ranch 30 miles from Cody in the Greybull River Valley and returned to Nebraska in the fall. The following summer she returned to the Emil R. Hague ranch, and as she said, "married the boss" in the fall.

In 1956, she, Emil and three children moved to Absarokee where she lived until her husband's death in 1965. The following year, she married Charlie Thomas and moved to Three Forks. Charlie died in 1982 and Nellie continued to live in Three Forks until 1997, when she moved to Billings.

Nellie loved gardening, crossword puzzles, poetry, music and, most of all, she enjoyed doing oil painting (Charlie bought her first set of paints) and playing the piano.

She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers Bill, Loren and Jim; and sisters Betty and Ruth; and one grandson, Shannon.

Surviving her are a son, Vaughn Hague (Karleen), and a daughter, Nancy Bekke (Nolan), both of Billings; a brother, Lou Armstrong (Donna) of San Antonio, Texas; and a sister-in law, Leona Armstrong of Iowa City, Iowa; as well as nieces and nephews. Also surviving her are her grandchildren: Brenda Kinsey (David), David Martin, Jr. (Shawn), Sue Robbins (Will), Nathan Bekke (Christi), Michael Bekke, Stacy Hague and Sharon Hague; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Nellie's family wishes to thank Dee, Diane and the rest of the staff at Ginny Wanner's Personal Care Facility for the loving care the last three years and most recently to the nursing staff at St. Vincent's Healthcare and to Dr. Mahares and to Rocky Mountain Hospice. Previously she lived at Don and Bev Lee's home on Cook Avenue.

Funeral services will be held for Nellie on Friday, July 8, at 10 a.m., at the Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary. A graveside committal service will be held Saturday, July 9, 11 a.m., at Sunset Memorial Park in Belgrade.

Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
