From the research of Rutherford county author Barry Lamb, Johnny worked as a clerk in a Murfreesboro dry goods and grocery store owned by Thomas Snell. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in April 1861, joining the 1st Tennessee Infantry Regiment, the "Rutherford Rifles".
Johnny did very well in military service, distinguishing himself at the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862. His older brother, Levi D. Jarratt, was killed at Shiloh while fighting for the 45th Tennessee Infantry. Following the battle Johnny Jarratt was elected 1st sergeant.
Six months later the 1st Tennessee fought at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky. Nine members of the Rutherford Rifles were killed, including Sgt. John Thompson "Johnny" Jarratt.
Less than a week before Johnny was killed, his younger brother James Saunders Jarratt enlisted at the age of 17. James Saunders survived the war and lived until 1918.
