MARGARET JENNINGS SHEA MONTPELIER — Margaret Jennings Shea died Friday, July 12, 2002, in Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., following a brief illness.

She was born in Swanton on Nov. 11, 1928, the daughter of Mildred (Bradley) and Harold Bliss.

She attended Swanton schools and graduated from Swanton High School, the valedictorian of her class. In 1950, she became the first woman to receive a B.S. in civil engineering from Tufts University. She worked for the Vermont Agency of Transportation as a bridge and environmental engineer for more than 30 years before retiring in 1987. She was a registered professional engineer in Vermont.

Margaret was married to James R. Jennings Jr. in September 1951, with whom she had three children. He died in October 1971. June 30, 1984, she married Harold P. Shea, with whom she shared the remaining 18 years of her life.

Throughout her life, she volunteered for various community services including the board of trustees of Bethany Congregational Church and as a tour guide at the Vermont State House. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling extensively with her husband after she retired. Her many interests ranged from computers to counted cross-stitch, but, by far, she was most devoted to her loving husband and family. We shall miss her consideration, her counsel, and her unyielding strength.

She is survived by her husband, "Mike" Shea of Montpelier; her two sons, Patrick C. Jennings II and his wife, Mary, of Bonita Springs, Fla., and J. Bradley Jennings and his wife, Teresa, of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; and her daughter, Megan Jennings Tucker and her husband, Douglas, of Springfield. She also leaves three grandchildren, Abbie Marie and Callan James Jennings of Greensboro, N.C., and Matthew Douglas Tucker of Springfield; three stepsons, Steven Brian and Jon Shea; two stepdaughters, Brenda and Lynne Shea; and seven grandchildren, Ian, Caitlin, Kelsey, Bridget, Michaela, Devlin and Nell.

She was predeceased by a brother, Burtt E. Bliss.

There will be a memorial service in Bethany Congregational Church on Tuesday, July 16, at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow.

Guare and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
