Gertrude Irene Hepworth, 104, of Chamberlain, South Dakota, died Wednesday, December 1, 1999, at a Chamberlain, SD nursing home. She was born July 30, 1895 in Burlingame, Kansas, the daughter of Charles Barnes and Margaret Jane (Waggoner) Kelley.


Gertrude graduated from high school in Burlingame, KS. She married George Clayton Hepworth on August 16, 1917, in St. Louis, MO. He died Sept. 18, 1949.


She lived in St. Louis, MO; Fort McClellan, AL; Burlingame, KS; Scranton, KS; Casper, WY; Foster, WA; Klamath Agency, OR; Fort Thompson, SD; Montana; and she moved to Chamberlain, SD in 1950.


Gertrude taught in rural schools in Kansas. She worked for Wendt's Store in Fort Thompson, SD, the Ben Franklin Store, and the Rainbow Cafe, both in Chamberlain, SD.


She was a member of the United Church of Christ, Senior Citizens, Order of Eastern Star, & the Auxiliaries to the American Legion and the Hospital & Home.


Preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George C. Hepworth; son, George C. Hepworth Jr; and her daughter, Evelyn I. Massie.
