Vera Anne Browne, 84, of Winona died Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona.

Vera was born Oct. 31, 1920, in Lismore, Minn., to Peter and Anna (Berning) Kopp. On Nov. 25, 1946, she married William J. Browne Jr., in Wadena, Minn. He preceded her in death on Nov. 19, 1995.

Vera attended the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, Minn., and was a graduate of the Minnesota School of Business, Minneapolis. From 1941 to 1944, she worked in Edmonton, Canada, as a secretary for Bechtel, Price, Callahan that built the AlCan Highway from Canada to Fairbanks, Alaska.

She and William moved from Wadena to Winona in 1958. She was a secretary with the Christian Brothers Provincialate at Saint Mary's University, Winona, and in the career planning and placement office at Winona State University for 17 years, retiring in 1985.

She was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, where she was involved with the funeral lunch committee and prayer chain.

She was a social member of Westfield Golf Club and an active bridge player.

Vera volunteered at Saint Anne's from 1983 to 2004, and served on the Auxiliary Board of Directors. She also volunteered at Winona Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary from 1992 to 2002, and at the Tau Center at St. Teresa's College.

Her retirement winter months were spent in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., with friends from Winona, the United States and Canada. Vera's snowbird friends were very special to her.

Vera's interests included being with her family, watching sports, playing bridge, swimming, and relaxing with friends and family at her cottage on the Mississippi River.

She is survived by her seven children, William J. Browne III, Garland, Texas, Patricia (Michael) Greenless, Milford, Mich., Timothy (Colleen) Browne, Excelsior, Minn., Thomas (Sheila) Browne, Wayzata, Minn., Peg (Randy) Sveum, Rochester, Minn., Robert (Carol) Browne, Winona, and Peter (Michelle) Browne, Plymouth, Minn.; 15 grandchildren, Elizabeth Browne, Sarah Greenless, Jessica Greenless, Thomas Greenless, John David Browne, Michael Browne, Bryan Browne, Angela Browne, Carissa Browne, Erik Sveum, Patrick Sveum, Kristofer Sveum, Britta Browne, Mollee Browne and Matthew Browne; stepgrandson, Wyatt (Teja) Crane; great step-grandsons, Ian and Nathanael Crane; a sister, Wanda Mae Lepper, Wadena, Minn.; and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Wayne Charles Kopp; a grandson, George Thomas Browne; and a granddaughter, Alexandra Margaret Browne.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona, with the Rev. Paul E. Nelson and the Rev. John M. Sauer concelebrating.

Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona. Serving as pallbearers will be Vera's grandsons and godson, Greg "Skip" Olson.

Visitation will be Monday, June 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona. There will be a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also be at the Cathedral on Tuesday, one hour prior to the Mass.

Vera will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, 1347 West Broadway, Winona, MN 55987, or the charity of your choice.
