Henry’s parents’ names were not noted on his death certificate, but best guess is that he was the son of German immigrants Charles Libbert and Catherine Rieman, who married on 17 Oct 1864 in Dearborn Co., Indiana. John Henry was born about a year later. Other children followed—Mary Catherine, John Edward, Sarah M., Elizabeth Catherine, Mary Minnie and Louis Fredrick.

I found the family on the 1870 Census, living in Caesar Creek, Dearborn Co., Indiana. Charles Libbert, aged 28, was a farmer. Catherine, aged 26, was keeping house. There with their parents were Henry, aged 6, Mary, aged 4, and 2-year-old Eddie.

Sometime after Louis’ birth in the summer of 1877 and the spring of 1880, the family lost wife and mother Catherine. She would have been about 34 or 35 years old.

Henry’s father Charles Libbert married second-wife Mary Sherman on 1 Apr 1880 in Dearborn Co., Indiana, just in time to be enumerated together on that decade’s census. Charles Libbert, aged 38, was “keeping toll gate.” Mary, aged 23, was keeping house. There with their father and step-mother were Henry, aged 15, Mary Catherine, aged 13, John Edward, aged 12, Sarah, aged 10, Margaret Catherine, aged 7, Mary, aged 5, and Louis Fredrick, aged 3.

Henry was likely still living at home when the now-lost 1890 Census was taken. Just before the 1900 Census, he married Anna Buchanan on Christmas Day, 25 Dec 1898 in Dearborn Co., Indiana. I found three children for the couple—John H. (22 Mar 1900 – 15 Sep 1970), Katherine (13 Jan 1902 – 24 Aug 1982), and William (24 Apr 1905 – 7 Oct 1978).

The 1900 Census found the family in Washington Township in Dearborn Co., Indiana. Henry Libbert, aged 34, was farming for a living. Anna, aged 33, reported that she had had one child. There with his parents was 1-month-old son John. Also living with the family was 7-year-old Clifford Sherman, identified as a nephew.

Before the 1910 Census came around, the family moved and was living in Center Township in Boone Co., Indiana. Henry Libbert, aged 44, was working a new farm. Anna, aged 43, reported that she had had three children, all of them still alive. There with their parents were John, aged 10, Katherine, aged 8, and William, aged 4.

By the time the 1920 Census was taken, the family was back living in Dearborn County’s Center Township. Henry Libbert, aged 53, was still farming for a living. Anna, aged 50, still had her three children under her protective wing—John, aged 19, Katherine, aged 18, or William, aged 14.

Two years after that census, Anna and Henry’s daughter Katherine married Carl R. Kittle on 30 Mar 1922 in Ohio Co., Indiana. Son John married Laura L. Camerer on 22 Aug 1925 in St. Joseph, Berrien Co., Michigan. I couldn’t find a marriage record for William that decade, but he married Juanita Ruth Laird on 10 Feb 1940 in Marion Co., Indiana.

The 1930 Census placed the family on Maple Ave. Rd. in Center Township (Plymouth) in Marshall Co., Indiana. Henry Libbert, aged 65, was still actively farming. Anna, aged 60ish (56 on the record), was keeping house. Their nest was empty.

They were still living in Plymouth a decade later. Henry Libbert, aged 74, was enjoying a well-deserved retirement. Anna, aged 70ish (65 on the record), was by his side.

On 25 Dec 1948, Anna and Henry celebrated both Christmas and their golden wedding anniversary.

Anna and Henry will appear on one last census record when the 1950 Census is released in 2022. Anna lived to age 87, passing on 10 May 1955. Henry only lived another two years without his helpmate and companion, following her into the light on 14 Oct 1957, five days into his ninety-second year.
