Marcia Jacqueline Wilson-LaFay

Marcia J. LaFay, 83, of New Meadows, Idaho, passed away Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, in the McCall Hospital. A memorial service to honor Marcia will be held at a later date.

Mom was one of the last of her generation born in Meadows Valley. Her grandparents on both sides homesteaded adjoining ranches in the late 1800s on what was called Wilson Lane, but is now known as Cemetery Road. The cemetery sits on the homestead of Mom's grandfather, John Wilson from Aberdeen, Scotland.

Mom and her twin sister, Marion, were born on the ranch to Dick and Marie Wilson, Aug. 5, 1923, delivered by their grandmother, Leota Becker. They only weighed a few pounds each and were kept in a box behind the wood stove to keep warm. Their older sister, Margaret, thought they must be kittens. Mom grew up on the ranch, but because of the severe winters, the family often wintered in California with the Albert Campbells, or north to Lewiston, and even downtown New Meadows. Margaret's fragile health and the happiness of their twin girls always came first. Our grandmother LaFay once told me they were the most beautiful little girls in the Valley with their long black ringlets to the waist, but oh my, so very, very spoiled.

Mom married Vernon P. (Bud) LaFay in Lewiston on May 9, 1941, and except for their separation during the war, have never been apart. The last words they spoke to one another were "I love you."

After our grandfather, Clarence LaFay, died, Mom worked side by side with our Dad until they retired in 1993. LaFay's Place was a pool hall, barbershop, bathhouse, and sometimes a restaurant. LaFay's Theatre was across the street. Here they held school ballgames, dances, elections, roller-skating, movies and anything else the town needed. Mom was in her element. She loved being a part of all this activity and boy, like it or not she was definitely a presence.

When our folks retired, Mom got to take many wonderful trips, San Francisco being one of her most favorite cities. On one of her many life flights to St. Luke's in Boise, she and daddy were flown down in a King Air 90. Mom asked the pilot if he would please pass Boise and take them on to San Francisco. He said, "Marcia, if you've got the plastic, I'll fly you anywhere you want to go."

Mom did everything with enthusiasm. She loved to dance and to visit with her special friend Hazel on the telephone. Also she spent many hours baking wonderful bread and rolls for her family and for her special neighbors, Marvin and Lynda. After retirement, mom was very active in the senior center, helping with their pie sales and other activities. She always dressed in colorful clothes with jewelry to match and enjoyed every great meal.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Vernon (Bud) LaFay; twin sister, Marion Patoray; daughter, Mona Anderson and husband, Tom; son, Milton (Buddy) LaFay and wife Viki, all of Meadows Valley; and son, Miles LaFay and wife Susan of Lewiston. In addition to her children, Marcia is survived by six grandchildren: Marcy, Toni, Stacy, Jacques, Molly and Brent; and three great-grandchildren: Bailey, Thomas and Caleb, with another great-grandchild due in July; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James (Dick) and Marie Wilson; and her sister, Margaret Percifield.

The family would like to thank the Meadows Valley EMTs and the doctors and staff of the McCall Hospital who cared for Mom with respect and tenderness.

Memorials in honor of Marcia may be made to the New Meadows Senior Citizen Center, P.O. Box 399, New Meadows, ID 83654; or to the Meadows Valley Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 532, New Meadows, ID 83654.

Cremation was under the direction of the Heikkila Funeral Chapel in McCall.
