Herbert Vernon "Chub" Arnold, 89, died May 3, 2018, at Wellmont Hospice in Bristol, TN. Chub was well loved by many and was truly a wonderful human being. He was a devout Christian, a friend to all, and a care giver to many in the Saltville area. He loved Saltville where he was born and lived his entire life. Chub worked for many years for Olin Matheson Corp. and finished his successful career at the Virginia State Water Control Board. He was a devoted member and leader of the Main Street Christian Church. Chub was a super athlete, especially in the sport of baseball. He was a key player and later manager of the Saltville Alkalies, a semi-pro baseball team from 1944-1967. He mentored many young men from the Saltville area as their baseball and basketball coach, as their Sunday School teacher, and as their friend and counselor. He loved to attend high school sports and to watch college and professional sports on television.

Chub was the loving husband of Betty Coe Arnold for 59 years until her death in 2007. He was the loving and caring father of Larry Brian "Yogi" Arnold of Chilhowie. He leaves behind Yogi and his wife, Betty Jo, step grandchildren, Courtney and husband, Cory Brown and soon to be born baby Ellie Rae of Abingdon and Tonya and husband, Shawn Lawson, of Widner's Valley and step great grandchildren Hayley, Katie, Kadon, and Aidan Lawson. Chub was the patriarch of the Arnold family. All members of the Arnold family across the USA and Europe looked to Chub as the "father figure". Chub was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert Roy "E.R." Arnold, Sr., and Virgie Booth "Lady" Arnold, brothers E.R. "Buck", Richard, Buddy Gene "Bay", and Harold Edward, and sisters in law, Sadie, Mary Ellen, and Teddie. He leaves behind brothers, David Burton, and his friend, Jan Nowalk, of Greensburg, PA, and Danny Franklin and wife, Sue, of North Myrtle Beach, SC. Chub will be dearly missed by sisters in law, Shirley of Glade Springs, Jody of Chatham, and Jean of Wilmington, NC, and numerous nieces and nephews. Especially missing Chub will be his dear companion of recent years, Bernice Dunn, of Abingdon.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday May 6, 2018 at Main Street Christian Church in Saltville with Rev. Stan Dunham, Rev. Barry Loupe and Mr. Tony Rector officiating. Burial will follow in the Elizabeth Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Henderson Funeral home.
Memorial donations may be made to Main Street Christian Church. On the list of requirements to get into heaven, Chub Arnold will have a check mark next to each one!
