John married Margaret Jane Charlton on March 16, 1898. At the time, he was employed in real estate and living at 1426 Susquehanna Ave. The wedding was held at the Charlton mansion at 2700 Girard Avenue and had many guests, including my McLachlan and McArthur family on his wife's sister Jane's side.
The couple had children William, born 1899, and Andrew, born 1903. Andrew died in infancy.
Shortly after being married, he partnered with his brother-in-law Francis Charlton, who, at that time, was continuing the coal business in the name of his father William Charlton.
Boyd's Co-Partnership and Residence Directory for 1900 (page 151) lists, "Charlton William (John Cascaden), coal, 28th c Pennsylvania av". The information for this directory was most likely compiled in the Fall of the previous year.
Things must have soured, however, because Francis Charlton ran the following ad in the February 22, 1900 Philadelphia Inquirer disassociating the business from that of his brother-in-law's:
"JOHN CASCADEN IS IN NO WAY CONNECTED with the Charlton Coal Co., 28th and Brown; the business is continued under the former management. FRANK CHARLTON"
In 1900 John Cascaden was a teamster and was living at 2716 Brown St. In 1906 returned to real estate as a broker and was living at 2806 Girard Ave. when he fell ill of cerebral meningitis and died.
Public Ledger March 3, 1906, page 9:
CASCADEN. - Suddenly, on March 1, 1906, JOHN, husband of Margaret J. Cascaden (nee Charlton), in his 34th year. Relatives and friends, and all organizations of which he was a member, are invited to attend the funeral, on Monday, March 5, at 2 p.m., from his late residence, 2806 Girard ave. Interment at Mount Moriah cemetery.
After her husband John's death, Margaret was apparently unable to care for William. In 1910 he was living at a boarding house at 1612 - 1614 Green St. By 1920, the boy had grown, was gainfully employed and living again with his mother.
