John E. Elledge was born in Wilkes County, NC, the son of Joseph Addison Elledge and Margaret Roberts Elledge. On June 24, 1850, John married Rebecca M. Brown. They were the parents of 10 children, 5 sons and 5 daughters. John worked in Wilkes County as a farmer with real estate valued at $150. In the 1860 census, John and Rebecca moved with their first 4 children to Shawns Cross Roads in Johnson County, TN. John was working there as a farm laborer with real estate valued at $300 and personal property $300. Only a few years later, the Civil War would bring division to the people of Wilkes County. "The Daily Constitution" (Aug 23, 1876, p. 4) reported the testimony of his Wilkes County neighbors that John E. Elledge "was a Union sympathizer who fled to the North and remained there until the close of the war." By 1861, John and Rebecca were the parents of 5 young children. Two more were born during the war years and 3 after 1865. The 1870 census shows John E. Elledge living alone in Wilkes County in a separate residence near Rebecca. She lived with 9 of their children. John E. Elledge died in 1872 at age 45, possibly from an illness like TB?
