Ethel was the Fifth child of James Albert and Phebe (Nellie) Ellen (Holliday) Flanagan, and the Granddaughter of Benjamin Franklin and Mary Jane (Boggs) Holliday. On June/23/1899, Ethel Married Olin Hays Mendenhall, in New Castle, Henry County Indiana, and together they had two children, they were, Dwight J. Mendenhall, and Mary Ester Mendenhall (Williamson). Olin her husband died in 1945, in Atlanta, Hamilton County Indiana. Ethel died while on vacation in Florida, at the age of 84 years old.

Ethel Mendenhall Services for Ethel Mendenhall. 84, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday [Jul 14, 1962] in Shirley Brothers Irving Hill Chapel. Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel after 2 p.m. tomorrow. Mrs. Mendenhall, 4020 N. Pennsylvania, died Tuesday [Jul 10, 1962] in Naranja, Fla., where she was visiting a relative. A native of Cicero, she had lived in Indianapolis 42 years. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America. Her husband was the late O. H. Mendenhall, a former Indianapolis attorney. Surviving are a daughter, Maryesther [Mary Ester] Williamson, and a son, Dwight Mendenhall, Indianapolis; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
