Norman attended Lawrence country school south east of Dante. He enlisted in the US Army in 1957 and served in Wiesbaden, Germany until 1959. Norman was baptized at the United Methodist Church in Wagner and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Avon. At the time of his death, he was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Wagner. He was also a member of VFW Legion Post 7319 in Wagner and received his 15 year pin this past year.
Norman married Shirley Jerke on November 29, 1953. They worked together at the Human Services Center in Yankton, and then for many years side by side on the farm. He also loved to tell stories of when he worked on the Fort Randall Dam near Pickstown. Two children were born to their union, Randy and Sherrie. Norman will be remembered for his love of music, (especially Gary’s band), shopping at Goodwill stores and pawn shops, and making people smile with his corny jokes, silly expressions and animated animals. He loved having his grandchildren and great-grandchildren at the farm and always had treats to share.
Thankful for having shared his life are daughter-in-law Paula of Wagner; son-in-law Jim Nedved of Wagner; his grandchildren Paul Gibson; Jillian (Tavis) AC Gibson; Cheray (Tyler) Christiansen; Evan (Cassandra) Nedved; great grandchildren: Seriah Nedved, Luca, Liam, Torin, Rorik, and Saoirse AC Gibson; and Lily and Lincoln Christiansen. Also thankful are his sister, Verna (Glen) Jerke; brother Gary (Linda) Gibson; sisters-in-law: Velda Jerke; Delores Peters; Clarice (EJ) Burke; Lois (Ron) Willman; Wilma Estes; Donna (Ron) Bruna; and brother-in-law Gary (Susan) Jerke; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents; wife; children; grandsons James and Jory Nedved; sisters Betty Grimme and Wilma Olsen; infant brother Charles; and brothers-in-law: Willie Peters, Freeman Boelter, Alan Klemme, Clifford Jerke, Herb Olsen and Fred Grimme; and nephews: Jackie and David Peters, Arlan Jerke and Ronald Grimme.
