Martha was the third known child of Heinrich Christoph and Louise Balgemann Battermann of Hillside or Proviso Twp. The family had affiliation originally with Zion Lutheran Church (the "mother" church for German Lutherans) then moved to Immanuel Lutheran at Hillside, where a sister Lydia who died in 1888 and mother Louise (d. 1893) are buried.
