Mr. Bowers was born, April 10, 1926, in Dayton, Ohio, and was the son of the late, Wilmer and Clara Bowers. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Beverly Baker
"Fuzz" graduated from Harrisonburg High School in 1944, where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He was considered by many, to be the best athlete ever to graduate from Harrisonburg High School. After graduating high school, Fuzz Bowers enlisted in the Army and was a Veteran of Overseas Duty during WWII. In 1946, he was discharged and came back and attended Shenandoah College in Dayton, Va., playing basketball and baseball. In the fall of 1947, he was awarded a full scholarship to Wake Forest University for basketball as well as baseball, later transferring to Bridgewater College and playing sports for them as well. When he graduated from Bridgewater, he went to work for Merck and Co., for four years before taking his first coaching position in 1957 at Broadway High School. Doing what he loved, he was the Head Basketball Coach and also assisted in coaching the football team. In 1963, Fuzz came back to his home to become Head Basketball Coach at Harrisonburg High School, leaving in 1966 and going to work for Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation Department as the first Athletic Director retiring in 1981. Fuzz is in the Hall of Fame at Harrisonburg High School, Bridgewater College and Broadway High School where he will always be known for a being a great athlete, great coach, and a person with a great character.
In 1981, Fuzz married Betty Dovel Bowers who survives. Also surviving are two stepsons, Charles Stover and wife, Christine, and Douglas Stover and wife, Betty June; a stepdaughter, Jacklyn Daugherty and husband, James; four step-grandchildren, Travis, Mike, Christina, and Stephanie; three step great-grandchildren, Kristy, Savannah, and Cole; three brothers, Donnie Bowers and wife, Lucy, William Bowers and wife, Wilma and Charles Bowers, and wife, Sharon; brother-in-law, Larry Baker; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Honoring his wishes, his body will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 21, 2017, at Victory Fellowship Church in Dayton, with Sonny Henkel officiating.
