Chester was the son of Nathaniel Huckins born in Barrington NH and Hannah Bickford of Sedgwick, Hancock County Maine.
Chester grew up in Charleston, Penobscot County, Maine. As a young man he began his career as a doctor establishing a practice in Milo, Piscataquis County, Maine. He was a voluntary surgeon during the Civil War and returned to Milo at the end of the war. He married Frances (Margaret) F. McAdams born in 1832 in New Brunswick who came with her parents to Maine in 1834.
Chester died at the age of 47 of paralysis following an illness and was buried with his parents in the Village Cemetery in Charleston. He has a stone with GAR marker. His widow Frances survived him and remarried the following year to Allen Monroe of Milo. She died in New Hampshire around 1905.
