Dean Foland, 83, of Columbus died Sunday, April 22, 2018, at Cottonwood Place in Columbus.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. through 2 p.m. Saturday, April 28 at Gass Haney Funeral Home. Private family interment will be held on a later date.

Dean Earl Foland was born March 8, 1935, in Belgrade to Earl and Phyllis (Brown) Foland. He graduated from Belgrade High School in 1953, where he participated in basketball, softball and baseball. Dean started teaching school right out of high school. He taught first through eighth grade at Nance County Country School Distict #17 while attending Wayne State College during the summer months.

On June 23, 1956, Dean entered the United States Navy and served until his honorable discharge on June 8, 1958. On Aug. 23, 1958, Dean was united in marriage to Ona Mae Hansen at the Timber Creek Lutheran Church in Belgrade. The couple lived in Columbus and O’Neill, Nebraska, before returning to Columbus where they made their home.

Dean worked for Nebraska Public Power District for 35 years. Family vacations were spent going to Erickson, Nebraska, many times with extended family members as well. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially trips to the lake cabin at Fort Randall, South Dakota, where many happy memories were made with the grandchildren. His grandchildren were his pride and joy.

The family expresses a special "thank you" to Tabitha Hospice, and the staff at Cottonwood Place, for the care and attention shown to Dean over the past number of months.

Dean is survived by his daughter, Theresa (Tom) Shank of Columbus, grandson Justin (Christine) Shank of Lincoln, great grandchildren Carson, Sawyer, and Jovie Shank of Lincoln; granddaughter Makenzie (Brett) Kohmetscher of Lawrence, grandson Carter (special friend Emily Franzen) Shank of Lincoln, daughter Linette (Gary) Kurtenbach of Lincoln, grandson Kyle (Bryttie) Kurtenbach of Chicago, grandson Alex Kurtenbach of Lincoln, grandson Jack Kurtenbach of Lincoln, sister Sharyn Poston of Gretna, brother-in-law Norman (Edna) Hansen of Colby, Kan.; sister-in-law Sharon “Kay” (John) Fehrs of Norfolk, sister-in-law Janet Hansen of Seward, sister-in-law Angie Hansen of Fullerton and many nieces and nephews.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Phyllis Foland, spouse Ona Mae Foland, grandson Jeremy Shank, granddaughter Jill Kurtenbach brother-in-laws Vernon and Lloyd Hansen, Don “DD" Hamel, Don Fitzgerald and Dewey Poston, and sister-in-laws Arlene Ann Hamel and Eva Fitzgerald.
