Hastings resident Millard H. Cates, 79, died Monday June 1, 1998 at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion. Mr. Cates was born Jan 20, 1919 to Ross and Lura (Clarke) Cates in Bancroft. He graduated from Hastings College in 1941. He served in the US Army during World War II. He received a master's degree from Columbia University. He also studied at the University of Michigan and in Kassel, Germany. On March 7, 1948 he married Alta Ohlsson in Hastings. He began teaching music at Gothenburg High School. He also taught private voice lessons. After his discharge from the army he served as a Hastings College Conservatory of Music voice faculty member. From 1958-68 he taught at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. He returned to Hastings College as chairman of the Music Department. In 1980 the Hastings College Board of Trustees appointed him Charles L. Stone Professorial Chair of Music. He was awarded an honorary doctor of music degree in 1984 upon his retirement. In 1994 he was named the Hastings College Alumni Association Outstanding Alumnus.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as coordinator of music and was director of the Chancel Choir. He was an elder in the session. He also served as director of the St. Cecilia Adult Choir, YWCA Choralettes and various Masonic organizations. He was active in the Hastings Community Theatre.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Nancy Hunnicutt of Fort Collins, CO; one son Robert of Hastings and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
