CHEHALIS (AP) — Three persons were killed and one injured in a head-on collision on Interstate Highway 5 Friday afternoon.
The accident happened just north of the Cowlitz River bridge, 17 miles south of here.
The dead were tentatively identified as Robert S. Watson, 72, of Portland; Warren E. Olson, 18, of Kent, and Watson’s wife.
Robin Watson, 13, of Seattle, a granddaughter of the Watsons, was in serious condition at a Chehalis hospital.
Olson Driving South
The State Patrol said Olson was driving south, towing another vehicle. In attempting to pass a truck and trailer, Olson overtook another southbound car driven by Noreen Simoes, 32, of Burnaby, B.C.
As Olson pulled back into the right hand lane, the towed vehicle began whipping, causing his car to go out of control. It struck the Simoes vehicle, crossed the center divider and hit the Watson vehicle head on.
Mrs. Simoes and a man and boy in the car with her escaped injury, the State Patrol said.
The Watsons’ Portland address was 6611 N.E. Bellevue.
