Dr. Michaels was born in Syracuse and attended St. Lucy's Academy. He attended St. Lawrence and Syracuse universities, graduating from the SU College of Medicine. Dr. Michaels was an Army major during World War II. He practiced medicine in Syracuse 1946 to 1971.
Dr. Michaels was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He also was an associate professor of surgery at Upstate Medical Center. Dr. Michaels was attending surgeon at Community-General and Crouse-Irving Memorial hospitals and consulting surgeon at Veterans Administration Hospital.
Dr. Michaels was past president of the Onondaga County Medical Society and Central New York Surgical Society. He was former chief of surgery at Syracuse Memorial Hospital. Dr. Michaels was a member of the Liederkranz Club and the Syracuse Power Squadron.
Surviving are his wife, the former Nora Barrett; four sons, Thomas A. of Rochester, William J., James E. and John R.; a sister, Mrs. Eugene Riley; two brothers, Robert of Tulsa, Okla , and Ned of Whitesboro; four grandchildren, an aunt and an uncle.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Edward J. Ryan and Son Funeral Home and at 10 am in St. Patrick's Church, where a Mass of the Resurrection will be concelebrated. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, DeWitt. Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p m tomorrow at the funeral home, 1628 W. Genesee St. Contributions may be made to either Crouse-Irving Memorial Hospital or St. Patrick's Church
