CHARLES NEWTON CATLEDGE

Charles Newton Catledge passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 in his home following a short battle with melanoma. He was 83.

A native of Tutwiler, Mississippi, born June 30, 1934, he was the son of the late Oraien, Sr. and Alma Louise Collins Catledge. He was a graduate of Millsaps College where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He married June Stellwagon on June 23, 1957 before enlisting in the United States Army where he Honorably Discharged in 1963 with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

He was owner and operator of the Charles N. Catledge Co., a heating, ventilation and air conditioning company, retiring following over 40 years of service.

He was a member of ASHRAE and Lions Club International where he served as past president.

Charles had a passion for vintage cars and shared a lifetime of happy moments with his friend, Steve, at Gilmore Automotive. He had many stories to share and if you had the time, he had the story – and if you were from Tutwiler, well you had better sit down for an hour. When it came to friends, well, I am afraid there just isn’t enough room in this whole paper to name them all. The path from his house to Penn’s and Hickory Pit was one so well traveled that sometimes his car left without him. Having four girls wore out many credit cards but he wouldn’t have had it any other way.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, June Stellwagon Catledge, in 2004; and a brother, Sonny Catledge.

He is survived by his four daughters: Lisa Catledge, of Jackson; Julie Stoshak (Jim), of Jacksonville, FL; Charlotte Randall (Paul), of Bangor, ME; and Laney Catledge (Sean Callaway), of Austin, TX; grandchildren: Reese Dueringer, Cole Dueringer, Jenson Stoshak, Jake Stoshak, and Jaedon Stoshak; step grandchildren: Whitney Walker and Lindsay Randall; great grandchildren: Finnley and Eliott; step great grandchildren: Elena, Leah and Jameson.; a nephew, Philip Catledge; adoptive granddaughter, Olivia Gilmore; and numerous other relatives and many, many friends. A special “thank you” to his lifelong friend and colleague, Perry Atherton, for everything he’s done.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Sebrell Funeral Home. All family and friends are invited to a Reception Celebrating Charles’ Life immediately following the service with the location to be announced.
