Ray A. Williams, 97, a longtime resident of the Forest Grove community, died Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Brookdale of Forest Grove.
Private Family Services Will Be Held at the Mt. View Memorial Gardens, 499 Watercrest Road in Forest Grove. A Flag Honor Presentation will be held under the auspices of the American Legion Washington Post #2 in Forest Grove.
RAY ARTHUR WILLIAMS was born September 27, 1920 on family farm at Hillside, Oregon, the son of the late Chester R. Williams and Naomi (Arthur) Williams. He was raised and received his education in the Forest Grove graduating from Forest Grove High School Class of 1938. After WWII he attended Oregon Teacher's College in Monmouth (known today as Western Oregon University), having received a B.S. degree in Education. He received his MS degree from WOU in 1957 and later a PhD from Portland State University.
He was a Veteran of I-186 and M-163, 41st Division during World War II. He joined the Army National Guard on Sept 16, 1940 and served in the National Guard station in Hillsboro. During WWII Ray served as a scout and artilleryman in New Guinea in the Pacific Theatre. He received the Infantry Combat award and Bronze Star. He joined the Navy reserve during the Korean conflict and was one of the founding members the Oregon National Guard during the Vietnam War. Ray retired a Major from the Oregon National Guard.
While stationed at Fort Sill Oklahoma he met Sargent Helen Louise Duncan. Private Ray Williams married Sargent Helen Duncan on March 31, 1945 in the Old Fort Chapel in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Following their marriage they resided in Charlotte North Carolina before moving to Sprague River, until moving to Monmouth, Oregon. They later moved to Manzanita, Oregon, until 1952, when they moved to the Forest Grove community, where he had resided since.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, on May 10, 2000, over fifty-five years of marriage together.
Ray taught school at Manzanita Elementary School before moving to Forest Grove where he served as the Principal, taught seventh grade and drove School Bus for the Gales Creek Elementary School. Ray then taught in the model schools program in Portland. He taught from 1947 to 1979 when he retired.
Ray also co-authored a book for elementary students explaining science experiments. He also taught science courses at OMSI for several years.
He was a member of the Forest Grove Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #2440, a past-commander of the American Legion Washington Post #2 in Forest Grove and a member of the V.F.W. Martin J. Ryan Post #2666, Camper Club.
Among his special interests, he enjoyed traveling, playing poker.

Ray was also preceded in death by wife Helen Duncan Williams his parents, Chester and Naomi Williams his daughter, Stephanie Wray.
Survivors include his 2children and their spouses, Janie Day, of Portland, Oregon; Chester and Deborah Williams, of Forest Grove, Oregon, his brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Lynn Williams, of Springfield, Oregon and his sister, Pat Brown, of Long Beach, Washington, son in law Jim Wray, of Seattle, Washington;
Also surviving are his seven grandchildren, Glen "Matt" Day and his wife, Ambria, of Sandy, Oregon; Jessica Lechuga and her husband Jason, of Portland, Oregon; Rebecca Day, of Portland, Oregon; Kino Martinez his wife Robin, of Seattle, Washington; Seth Wray and his wife Sheri, of Ontario, Canada; Naomi Person, of Hillsboro, Oregon and Kimberly Melby and her husband Arryn , of Halifax Virginia; his nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family suggests that remembrances may be contributions to the American Legion Washington Post #2, 2003 21st Avenue, Forest Grove, Oregon 97116 or to the V.F.W. Martin J. Ryan Post #2666, 310 S.W. Walnut Street, Hillsboro, Oregon 97123, in his memory.
