GRANVILLE, Grundy County, Missouri
Granville, an old town, flourished in the eighteen fifties, very near the present site of Dunlap.
It had a general and grocery store, whose principle trade was in whisky, and a blacksmith shop.
Here occurred the killing of McAfee and Phipps, about 1858.

The purpose of this chapter is to make mention, briefly of a portion only of those tragic events which have sometime been of great moment to the communities in which they occurred.
The record is not complete.
The doings of the Heatherleys, Grundy County's first criminals, are matters of tradition rather than of record. We can only know that they were here and committed numerous depredations, horse stealing and pilfering, prior to 1837.
In about 1859 there was a double killing at the town of Granville.
In a quarrel McAfee shot Phipps and was in turn shot by Clark Kirk FaG 40739691.

NOTES
Grundy county, Missouri in north central Missouri

Grundy County's recorded history began in the early 1800's.
The first settlers in Grundy county were General W.P. Thompson and his family, who arrived in 1833.
General Thompson's home still stands today, located in Crowder State Park, along the Thompson River.

About a year after Thompson settled, Levi Moore and his family arrived, and the area soon after became known as "Moore's Settlement".
In 1838 the first store opened in what was then called Lomax.

Grundy County was organized in 1841 with set boundaries. The county was named for Felix Grundy, Tennessee senator and United States attorney general under President Jackson.
In 1857, the county seat of Grundy County - Trenton, was born.
The first court in Grundy County was held in a log house in Trenton (known then as Lomax Store).

One of the county's main businesses from 1873 to 1943 was mining.
There were three different coal mines in the area, along with a major railroad, which helped the mining industry here to thrive.

NOTES
The Thompson River is the largest tributary of the Grand River in the central United States, flowing from southern Iowa into Missouri.

The river is 188 miles (303 km) long, and its drainage basin is roughly 1,850 square miles (4,800 km2), of which 1,111 square miles (2,880 km2) are in Missouri.

It rises in the agricultural lands of Adair County, Iowa, a few miles northeast of Greenfield.

The river initially flows east then bends south, passing Macksburg and Davis City and crossing Interstate 35.
It then flows into Missouri, where much of its course is channelized.
The Weldon River joins at the town of Trenton, the largest settlement along the Thompson River.
Below Trenton, the Thompson meanders south for another 25 miles (40 km), joining the Grand River just north of Utica in Livingston County.
