James Everett Bandstra was born on October 14, 1924, at a farm near Albia, IA. He was the 8th of 9 children born to Andrew and Jennie (De Jong) Bandstra. The family soon moved to a farm near Taintor, Iowa, where Jim spent the first several years of life. He attended country school near Taintor where he was a successful student, fueled by the desire to pass his tests and not be held in “jail” longer than required. He maintained he could have “morter fun at home” and after graduating from 8th grade he embarked on his life’s work of farming.

On August 20, 1945, he and Tena Mae Van Wyngarden were united in marriage at Tracy, Iowa. This date was significant as it was the same date and the same minister who had married her parents, Walter and Sadie (Stursma) Van Wyngarden. Following their marriage Jim and Tena Mae began farming on his parent’s family farm near Taintor, Iowa. To this union three sons were born: Roger Lee on July 20, 1946, Darwin James on September 14,1949, and Terry James on December 27, 1950. A few weeks after Terry was born Tena Mae suffered a stroke which impacted her speech and motor skills. Coping with this affliction along with her courage she continued to maintain their home with the capable assistance of her faithful husband, Jim. Subsequently Jim and Tena Mae and their family moved into Peoria, Iowa in 1952. Jim, the farmer who he was, continued to farm near Peoria, having a crop and livestock operation. On November 5, 2007, she passed away in the presence of her family at their residence in Peoria at the age of 84 years.

Jim was a lifelong student of God’s Word and steward of His creation. Jim’s early church home was Peoria Christian Reformed and later transitioned, for as long as his health permitted, to Lower Grove Church. He continued to enjoy listening to church services from First Baptist Church and reading the Word daily after he was confined mostly to his home. More importantly, he exemplified God’s love in the way he approached matters in life.

He spent countless hours tending livestock and working the land. In his later years, when his health prevented him from being active on the farm, he would ask Terry for updates on the crops and animals during their almost daily coffee time visits. Surpassing his love of the land was the love he had for his family and friends. Jim never met a stranger.

On May 30, 2009, Jim and Betty Lou (Van Roekel) Van Wyk were united in marriage in the front yard of her home north of Pella, Iowa. Rev. Andrew Bandstra, Jim’s brother, officiated at the wedding ceremony. Their families, Terry and Lona Bandstra, John and Faye Dieleman, Doug and Jan Van Wyk, became a blended family. Jim and Betty enjoyed their lives together at his home in Peoria where she passed away on March 21, 2017, following a long battle with cancer at the age of 87 years. With the assistance of home health care and the unfailing, faithful devotion of his son, Terry and his wife, Lona, Jim was able to continue living in his home, where he had resided for the past 66 years. He passed away there on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, in the presence of his family at the age of 93 years. Jim’s family includes the following children and grandchildren.
