A. Pauline Douglas, age 96 of Decatur, Illinois and formerly of Charleston, passed away on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at Decatur Memorial Hospital. A Graveside Service honoring and celebrating her life will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Mound Cemetery in Charleston with Reverend Dr. Bob Swickard officiating. Pauline was born September 11, 1921 in Charleston, the daughter of the late Oscar and Elva M. (Blumershine) Douglas. She is survived by two nieces and a nephew, Linda D. (Noah) Still of Decatur, Maggie D. (Doug) Beckmann of Mahomet, Illinois and John R. (Lori) Douglas of Charleston; a great-niece and three great-nephews, Susan E. Still of Decatur, Matthew B. Still and son, Madden O. Still, of Champaign, James A. Douglas of Charleston, and Christopher D. Beckmann of Parker, Colorado. In addition to her parents she was preceded by a brother, Jack Douglas.

Pauline was a graduate of Charleston High School and received her Bachelor’s Degree from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana and her Master’s Degree from the University of Chicago. She also did advance degree work toward her Ph.D at the University of Illinois. Pauline taught at Bloom Township High School and at Prairie State College in Chicago Heights. She truly loved inspiring the younger generations and enjoyed a career as an educator until the age of 78.

Pauline appreciated art and was a member of the Art Institute of Chicago. She was an avid reader and her expertise was in English Literature – especially Shakespeare. Pauline was a unique individual who identified with her Scottish heritage, enjoyed traveling and possessed an insatiable thirst for knowledge. She was a dear aunt and her nieces and nephew and their families all have wonderful memories of special times shared.
