Alexander Dock Smith (my 3rd Great Grandfather)was born abt. 1822 by best accounts. He was likely born in Smith County, Tennessee. DNA findings indicate he was a Descendant of Rev. Malcolm C. Smith and his first wife Rhodissa Fielding (Possibly Rhodisee Powell, daughter of Charles Powell and Elizabeth Brewer). I have done DNA testing at all of the major companies. I currently have over 72 DNA matches with descendants of Malcolm and Rhodissa Smith. Malcolm Smith was the first pastor of the East Fork of Goose Creek Baptist Church in Macon, then Smith County, TN. Alexanders wife Catherine(Wright) and her family attended church there, I have church records which list them all as members. I have been working for the past several years trying to narrow down which son of Malcolm and Rhodissa that Alexander and his siblings could descend from. I think I have narrowed it down to their son William Smith. Information contained in both the 1830 & 1840 census records back this up. Alexander had three brothers and one sister (Charlie, Wilson, Elizabeth & Timothy Caleb). Charlie and Wilson were the oldest, followed by Alexander, then Elizabeth and finally Timothy.
The 1830 Census for the household of William Smith lists:1 Male under 5 (Alexander), 2 Males 5-9,(Charlie & Wilson) 1 Male 30-39,(William) 1 Female under 5, (Elizabeth) 1 Female 20-29. (William's Wife) and the 1840 Census lists: Male 40-49,(William) Female 5-9,(Elizabeth) Male 5-9 (Timothy) Where was his wife?
Note that a letter (In my possession) written by one of Timothy's daughters states that her Grandparents (William & his Wife) died when Timothy was just 5 years old, which would give this William a death year of abt. 1840.
This has been and will be an ongoing research project of mine. Ill be happy to share what I know thus far with any descendants. I am looking for genealogical proof to back up the DNA, on paper. DNA does not lie and I feel that my information is as close as one can get to finding the parents of these five Smith children.
Alexander died in 1909 and is buried at the Mount Pisgah Church Cemetery in Silva, Wayne, Missouri.
