He was the son of Elmer A. and Ina R. (Labo) Gates. Edgar owned and operated Windy's Tavern in Harvard from 1955 to 1997. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Harvard. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the European Theater, where he received a Purple Heart. He later served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was past commander of the Woodstock Veterans of Foreign Wars, and he was a member of the Harvard American Legion and the Harvard Moose Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Shirley Vierck.
