William Ayres Addams II passed away on April 7th, 2018. He was born in Scotland, PA on June 27th, 1938, to Martha Angle Addams and Robert Wood Addams. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout, attended Mercersburg Academy, and was a graduate of Lafayette College (Class of 1960). Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the Marine Corps. Bill and Marcie (Over) married June 18th, 1960, and spent a year in Quantico, VA before being stationed in Hawaii at Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Base, where he served proudly from 1961-1964.
After returning to civilian life, Bill graduated from Dickinson Law School (Class of 1970). He was elected president of the Cumberland County Bar Association for 1999 and was also a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Civil Litigation Section, the Association of Defense Research Institute, and the Pennsylvania Defense Institute. Bill was known for his pro bono work and for helping those in need.
Bill was an avid golfer and he and Marcie loved to play tennis and travel. They were fortunate to have enjoyed many trips both domestic and abroad during their 57 years of marriage. They lived in Pennsylvania and Florida before settling in Southport, NC in 2014, and have built lasting friendships in each location.
Bill is survived by his wife and their three children, Woody (granddaughters Samantha and Sydney), David (daughter-in-law Michele, granddaughters Abby and Katie), and Beth (son-in-law Jesse). Bill also found a sense of family with their church, Southport Presbyterian.
The memorial service will be held at Southport Presbyterian Church at 3pm on April 28th with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be sent to the SECU Family House at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Lower Cape Fear Hospice of Brunswick County, or to the building fund at Southport Presbyterian Church. The outpouring of support from these communities, as well as from friends near and far, has been a blessing for the family.
