Conleth "Connie" Margaret (OBrien) McGee, 96, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away at 6:20 a.m. on Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at Granite Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born June 2, 1921, in Wessington, South Dakota, the daughter of the late George and Anna (Fitzgerald) OBrien, later moving to Rochester, Minnesota, until her family settled in Los Angeles, California, during the Depression. Mrs. McGee received a degree in English from Immaculate Heart College, Class of 1945, after taking a break to work in Washington, D.C., during World War II. Upon graduation, she worked as a librarian at Ascot Library, Los Angles, before accepting a position as a full-time librarian at Camp Beale near Marysville, California, where she met and later married on March 17, 1946, Marvin Lee McGee of Granite City stationed at the base. Mr. McGee preceded his wife in death on Dec. 13, 1992. Moving to Granite City in 1946, Mrs. McGee became a full-time homemaker before returning to the workforce in 1957 as a substitute teacher at Emerson School, later being hired fulltime while completing a degree in Education. She taught fourth and fifth grades at Emerson School before heading the schools Learning Center there and at Maryville School until her retirement after 25 years with the district. During her retirement she helped raise grandson, Alexander M. Hillmer-McGee, during his early years then later occasionally worked as a substitute elementary teacher for Holy Family School, Granite City. During retirement, she and her husband became hospital "book cart" volunteers for St. Elizabeth Medical Center and later Gateway Regional Medical Center, accumulating more than 3,500 service hours, and was a member of the medical centers Senior Circle group. She was an avid member of the Friends of the Six Mile Regional Library District. She was a dedicated founding board member of Alpha Center of Granite City, which provided housing for pregnant women in need. She was a faithful member of St. Joseph and Sacred Heart churches and Holy Family Catholic Church, where she was active with Young at Heart. She enjoyed travel in her later years. She was preceded in death, in addition to her husband and parents, by her sister, Elena (Sister Georgeann) OBrien, son-in-law Michael Hillmer, and sister-in-law, Patricia OBrien. Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Gregory McGee of Granite City and Vincent (Laura LaHay) McGee of Ste. Genevieve, Mo; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Georgeann McGee of Granite City, Monica (Robert) Smiggen of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Maureen (Robert) McGee-Ballinger of Custer, South Dakota; grandson, Alexander Hillmer-McGee of Granite City; step-grandson, Scott (Christine) Smiggen, and step-great-grandson, Spencer Smiggen, of Clayton, California; brother, Richard OBrien of Seal Beach, California; and sister and brother-in-law, Patricia (Balvin) Laubach, of Tustin, California; many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends. In celebration of her life, private family visitation will be held at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite City, followed by a funeral Mass for the public on Saturday, April 7 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Church, 2606 Washington Avenue, Granite City with Father Jeff Holtman as celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville. Memorials may be made to the Friends of the Six Mile Regional Library District, Holy Family School in Granite City or to masses.
