DAISY M. SWORD FITZ, 85, of Maugansville Road, passed away Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center. Born Oct. 12, 1925, in Blairs Valley, Md., she was the daughter of the late Harry F. Sword and Pearl Carbaugh Sword.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Wilbur G. (Bill) Fitz; and sisters, Leah Sword and Hilda Bricker (husband Forrest).

She is survived by her daughters, Cheri Fitz, and Angela Kearns; brothers, Carl Sword, of Hagerstown; Robert Sword of Mercersburg, Pa; Charles Sword, Blairs Valley; Fred Sword, Maugansville; sister, Mary Lou Yeager of Hagerstown; and many nieces and nephews.

She was a very active member of Trinity United Church of Christ, State Line, Pa., for more than 50 years. She served as elder, deacon, adult and children's Sunday school superintendent, taught adult and children's Sunday school classes and vacation Bible school classes, was a leader of Willing Workers, and coordinated the annual Christmas bazaar. She attended Clear Spring High School and earned her GED in 1973. She worked as a waitress at the Waffle Shop and Hotel Alexander; at Gilbert's Toy Factory; at Maugansville Elementary School, as an aide; and retired from Coffman Nursing Home.

She was a member of Maugansville Homemakers Club, West End Lioness Club and Maugansville Historical Society. She was a volunteer for Washington County Hospital Auxiliary and Washington County Rural Heritage Museum.

Funeral services were held at Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery.

WILBUR E. FITZ, 58, of Maugansville Road, died at Washington County Hospital on Friday morning. He was born in Shady Grove, Pa. and was the son of Newton K. and Emma Potter Fitz Baker.

He was a member of United Church of Christ, State Line, Pa. He was a veteran of WWII, serving as a Military Policeman. He had been employed at Troy Laundry and for the past 15 years at Maryland Correctional Institution.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Daisy Sword Fitz; daughters, Mrs. Cheri A. Ballinger and Miss Angela M. Fitz; brothers, Keller Fitz, Clyde Fitz, Harold Baker and Ralph Baker; sisters, Mrs. Mildred Haynes, Mrs. Ruth Buss Mrs. Alice Salvatore, Mrs. Nellie Burcham.

Arrangements will be announced by the Minnich Funeral Home.
