Mary Jane Tompkins was the daughter of George and Rebecca (Larue) Helm. She married Patrick Watson Tompkins on December 8, 1833 in Hardin county, Kentucky. She was the mother of Mary Tompkins who was born around 1836, George Helm Tompkins born 1834, and perhaps one more daughter named Julia. According to newspaper articles from 1857 she had been interred in a private cemetery in Vicksburg on March 14, 1840. She was "enclosed in a zinc coffin that had been filled with alcohol, which was re-enclosed in a wooden coffin, and all carefully packed in charcoal". She was disinterred on March 27, 1857 and the body was reburied "in the public cemetery" in the burial lot of her brother-in-law H. P. Hunt.
