Richard Jennings was born on February 3, 1911 to Leonard Parker & Clara Jane (Scott) Jennings in Santa Anna, Texas. Richard was the second of eight children. His oldest sister was Mary followed by younger siblings, Paul, William, Charlie, John, L. P. and Clara.

Lena Crow’s family was also residents of Santa Anna. She and Richard were friends and classmates. On June 26, 1932 they were married along the side of the Trickham Creek in Coleman County, Texas. Their first son, Richard Waymond was born in 1933 and lived only a few days. The second son, Herschel was born in 1936, followed by a third son, Kenneth in 1940.

They lived through the very hard times of the Depression in the 1930’s and the world unrest of the impending World War II. Richard worked for the WPA road construction in the late ‘30s and early 40’s. His WWII draft card described him with a light complexion, gray eyes and brown hair. He stood 5’9” tall and weighed 145 pounds.

The family continued living in Coleman County, south of Santa Anna, until 1943 when the Jennings’ moved to California. They remained in the state the remainder of their lives. However, they made many trips through the years back to Texas to visit relatives. Richard was a pipe fitter in southern California for many years and a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Porterville, California.

Richard passed away on September 19, 1998 in Arnold, California just a couple months after losing his sweetheart of 66 years. He was laid to rest with Lena at Mt. View Cemetery in San Bernardino, California.

Survivors included two sons, Ken (Deanna) Jennings of Arnold, California and Herschel (Kay) Jennings of Alto Loma, California; a brother, John Jennings and a sister, Clara Faye Pennington; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Richard Waymond; his sister, Mary Rice; his brothers, Paul, William, Charlie and L. P.
