Marie Elizabeth (Mietchen) Brooks

The Mass Of Christian Burial for Marie Elizabeth Brooks will be celebrated at 10:30 AM Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia, Father Brandon Farrar, celebrant. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Emporia. The Rosary will be recited at the church Tuesday evening at 7:00 P.M. with the family receiving friends before and following the rosary.

Mrs. Brooks died Friday, March 30, 2018 at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor at the age of 94.

Marie was born July 25, 1923 in Waverly, Kansas, the daughter of Carl and Dora (Sontag) Mietchen. Marie was the youngest of 5 children. She attended Saint Joseph Catholic School and Waverly Grade School. She later moved to Emporia and then to Lebo where she graduated high school.

Marie was a messenger for the Santa Fe Depot and then worked for Hallmark Cards and several pharmacies.

Marie met Bill Brooks on December 7, 1945 on a blind date. They were married 3 months later on February 3, 1946. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Emporia Fire Fighter Auxiliary.

She is survived by her four daughters, Dora Hartig, Becky Stapp, Joanna Sedgwick, all of Emporia, and Lisa Litch of Melvern; three sons, Bill Brooks and Joe Brooks, Emporia, and Tom Brooks, Ottawa; 22 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild and 1 on the way.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Brooks; a daughter, Anita Ewing, Hiawatha; her parents; three sisters, Lucille Horn, Hattie Horn, Caroline Knight and 1 brother, Charles Mietchen; 3 grandsons, Brian Jurgens, Ryan Brooks, and Thatcher Whillock.

A memorial has been established with the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with contributions sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, PO Box #175, Emporia, Kansas 66801.
