Son of the late Adolphus Elijah Burgess (1850–1921) and Celia Caroline Green (1850–1929); husband of Lillie Dixon Burgess (1886–1971).
Survivors include his, daughter, Bernice Evelyn Burgess Renfro (1922-1991); sons, Haskell Manning Burgess (1915–1960), Otis Carlyle Burgess (1916-1994), Broadus Troy Burgess (1920-2016), and Maurice Wilburn Burgess (1925-2015); 12 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Also predeceased by his sisters, Alice B. Guthrie; and Janie B. Whitlock; brothers, Eliphus Lige Burgess (1880–1951), F.W. Burgess, and W.F. Burgess.
Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon, December 24, 1938, at Brown's Chapel by Rev. John L. Painter and Rev. W.T. Tate; burial in the churchyard.
