Her family were prominent Petersburg tobacconists. She and her husband, William Gordon McCabe, had three surviving sons. She married McCabe in 1867. Her husband was from an illustrious Revolutionary family and he himself was known for his service to the Confederacy. After the war he was a renowned educator and award winning producer of scholarly literature. Jane and Captain McCabe were great travelers, accumulating many foreign friends.
