Arthur Chester Rees was born November 15, 1919, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of David and Ethel (Grinstead) Rees. He was a lifelong resident of the Altoona/Des Moines area. He was a graduate of East High School. Arthur proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during World War II in the South Pacific islands including Guam, Iwo Jima, and Guadalcanal, where he earned a Bronze Star. Arthur married Barbara Maxine Riley and they celebrated 67 years together prior to her death in 2013. Arthur was a self-employed arborist and owner of Rees Tree Service. He was a member of Sunshine Open Bible Church where he served in many capacities including Sunday school teacher, board member and Sunday school Superintendent.

Arthur passed away Monday, March 26, 2018, at the age of 98. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 30, at Sunshine Open Bible, 2130 Easton Blvd, Des Moines, IA 50317. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by funeral at 10:00 a.m. Burial with military honors will take place at Altoona Cemetery.

He is survived by his children, Byron (Linda) Rees, Linda (Russ) Seger, Phillip (Stephanie) Rees, Rebecca Rees, Betty Lou Rees, and Curtis (Janice) Rees, 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, siblings, Opal, Norma, and Merrill, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, 4 brothers, and 4 sisters.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the church in Arthur’s memory.
