A native of Chicago. Hazel began attending classes at the Art Institute of Chicago at 10 years of age. She later worked in the advertising department of the Chicago Tribune. She met her future husband one day on the sidewalk outside of the Tribune building during a lunch break.

When the family purchased a farm outside of Highland Park, Illinois, Hazel took on the task of modernizing and remodeling the farm to meet her growing family's needs. The home was the featured home in the Early Spring 1947 edition of Popular Home.

After the death of her husband, Hazel managed a motel in San Gabriel, California.

Wanting to see more of the world, Hazel took a tramp steamer around the world in 1965. When she returned after her journey, she knew that she was sick. Her goal was to have all her worldly belongings and treasures fit into her bright red Volkswagen Beetle before she passed away. She succeeded.

Near the end of her battle with cancer, this is the last entry in her journal:
Jan 21, 1967
"For I had all of the good things in life, and old age is not part of the picture -"
