James was the son of Charles Whitlock Calfee and Nancy D. Bailey. He was a 2nd Lt., Co. G, 24th Virginia Infantry, CSA. He enlisted on 2 June, 1861 at Lynchburg, VA (along with brother Harvey Milton Calfee and Henderson French Calfee. James died of typhoid fever at Camp Ellis, near Manassas, Virginia.
