Brent Parkinson Ballif, 86, 2503 S. 1400 W., Rexburg, ID, died March 22, 2018, of an apparent heart attack in his home.

He was born February 5, 1932 at Whitney, Idaho to Leslie Hughes Ballif and Ella Parkinson Ballif during the height of the depression. The family moved to Pocatello in 1938 when his father, a graduate civil engineer, was employed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) to develop and supervise projects to employ all of the eligible workers in the sixteen southern counties in Idaho.

Brent attended elementary and high school in Pocatello, graduating from Pocatello High School in 1950. He enjoyed playing the clarinet and studied for seven years with J. C. Gardiner who was the music professor at Idaho State University. He enjoyed playing in the school bands, high school pep band, university concert bands, Pocatello Municipal Band, as well as yearly recital performances. Many good experiences resulted from these and similar associations.

He studied Civil Engineering at Idaho State University in Pocatello for two years, after which he enrolled in Advanced ROTC and in the completion of the undergraduate Civil Engineering Program at the University of Idaho at Moscow.

He attended the University of Idaho at Moscow for two years, graduating with high honors in 1954 with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering and an interest to specialize in structural design. He attended Stanford University at Palo Alto, California, graduating with a M.S. degree in Civil Engineering in 1955. At this time he completed a four year course in Army ROTC in which he enrolled in 1951. He received a commission as 2nd Lt in the Army Corps of Engineers at that time. For the next two years he completed his active duty military commitment by completing the Engineer Officer Basic Course at Fort Belvoir, Virginia and as a Platoon Leader in the 561st Port Construction Company stationed at the Presidio of San Francisco ( Fort Baker), California.

Brent then returned to Pocatello and worked as an engineer for Bannock Steel Company which soon thereafter became the Gate City Steel Company. After about two years he left this company and with his father Les, established L.H. Ballif Associates, consulting Civil Engineers. He received his State of Idaho Professional Engineer License in 1959. This firm specialized in general civil engineering projects involving water and sewerage, land development and construction engineering which were managed by Les and structural engineering projects for buildings working for architects which projects were managed by Brent.

Brent enjoyed opportunities to teach at the university level which began while he was going to school at Stanford where he served as a Lecturer in Civil Engineering. This opportunity continued in 1959 when they initiated their consulting practice and Brent began teaching on a part time basis at Idaho State University in the Engineering Department and continued later in the Architecture Department. This relationship continued until about 1968. In 1983 Brent was authorized by examination to use the title of “Structural Engineer” when working in the State of California.

Brent was pleased to find out that he had been named “Outstanding Young Engineer “ for the State of Idaho in 1963 by the Idaho Society of Civil Engineers.

Their firm continued until 1999 when it was closed upon Brent’s retirement.

Brent married Barbara Bastow in 1963 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They had two children. Leslie Ella Ballif was born in 1965 and Adam Brent Ballif was born in 1975.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in many callings including member of Bishopric, Bishop, High Counselor, High Priest Group Leader and Stake Executive Secretary for fifteen continuous years. In 1977 he was called by the Presiding Bishop to serve as a member of the Civil/Structural Engineering Consultants Board to advise the Church Building Department and served in this capacity a number of years. He and Barbara served a thirty month Church Service Mission in the Physical Facilities Department in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2001-2003. In 2003 Barbara and Brent began serving as Ordinance Workers in the Salt Lake Temple.

In 2017, Brent and Barbara relocated to Rexburg, ID to live with their son Adam, daughter-in-law Kristi, and grandchildren Addison, Arielle, Emma, and Isaac. His daughter Leslie Rogers resides in Bountiful, Utah with son-in-law Jon Rogers, and grandchildren Ian, Alexandra, Rachel, and Christian.
