ST. GEORGE - Joseph I. Chavez, age 80, passed away Sunday, November 6, 2005. He was born July 1, 1925, in Avon, CO., to Abel and Ester Chavez.

Joseph grew up in Grand Junction, CO. where he attended school until the 9th grade and then he joined the U. S. Navy. He was discharged in 1940. He married Cecelia Garcia on July 21st, 1945 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grand Junction, CO.

He moved to Salt Lake City, UT. and worked for Kennecott Copper Corporation, and retired after 36 years.

He was active in the St. Patrick's Catholic Church for 36 years. He moved to St. George in 1996 after retiring. Joseph belonged to the St. George Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus for many years. He did volunteer work for the Senior Citizen Center, the church, and many other places where he was needed. Volunteer work was Joseph's hobby.

He had a big heart and great love for his family, a good sense of humor, and was always happy-go-lucky. Everyone was his friend.

He is survived by his wife Cecelia, his sons: Joseph Vernon of Las Vegas, NV., Mark Edward of St. George, Dennis John of Las Vegas, NV., sisters; Lisa Woodahl of Fruita, CO., Loretta (Al) Bufano of Salt Lake City, UT, five grandchildren Michael, Stefan, Matthew, Damian and Jessica Chavez, 14 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Abel and Ester, brother Lolo Clee Chavez, sisters Susie Otero, and Irene Humphry, and infant son Stephen Chavez. A special heartfelt thanks to Dixie Regional Medical Center, Dr. McCune, Dr. Te, and the staff, for all the great and loving care of Joseph.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 12, 2005, at the St. George Catholic Church, 259 W. 200 N., St. George, UT. A viewing will be held Friday at 7 p.m., also at the church. Interment will be in the Tonaquint Cemetery, under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary.
