Born July 31, 1924 in Silver City, New Mexico to Paul Vining Bates and Arabella Kimbrough Bates, John Paul was raised and educated in Fort Worth, Texas. He proudly served his country during World War II enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1942. Serving in Europe in the 70th Division Trailblazers as a sniper, John Paul received many decorations. After his discharge in 1946, he went to work for Phillips Petroleum Company in Denver, Colorado. He was later transferred to Midland, Texas. John Paul was an independent petroleum landman in Midland for many years. He was a member of First Baptist Church. His other memberships included the Masonic Lodge, the Permian Basin Landmans Association, American Legion, VFW, and Midland Genealogical Society.
John Paul is survived by his wife, Ann Bates of Midland, TX; sons, John P. Bates, Jr. of Midland, TX; and James C. Bates and his wife, Ramona, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; grandchildren, John P. Bates III of Midland, TX; and James Matthew Bates, Kaitlyn Ann Bates, and William Randall Bates, all of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; special "daughter", Anne Elizabeth Bates of Midland, TX.
"PawPaw" was greatly loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 7, 2007 in the Chapel of First Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Dow, Jack Russell, Ben Shattux, Fred Poe, Keith Poe, and Delbert Dollar. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
