Born April 10, 1938, in Knoxville, James graduated from Fulton High School in 1956, and after a short courtship married Norma Williams in 1961. He served in the U. S Army from 1961-1963 with a tour in Vietnam.
After making their home in Knoxville, they were blessed with three children while he worked in the HVAC industry prior to starting his own business, J&F Mechanical, in 1976. In 1971 they moved to Rutledge and made their home where he loved to spend time on the farm.
James was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who lead by example and taught his children the importance of hard work, honesty and love. Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old he will not depart from it. He was a long-time member of New Corinth Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde B. and Lennis (Tillman) McCubbins; brothers, Donnie and Gary “Joe” McCubbins; sister, Edna Greene.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Norma; children, Pam (Terry) Roach, Regina (Danny) Sutton, and Ed (Stephanie) McCubbins; grandchildren; Kacey (Shane) Voelker, Heather (Cody) Watson, Zachary, Grant, and Garrett Sutton, Tyler and Sydney McCubbins; great-grandson, Dallas James Watson; step great-grandson, Cason Watson; sisters, Helen Nelson and Anne Harbin; and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral service will be 7:00 PM Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at Bridges Funeral Home with Rev. Raymond Long, Rev. Robert Myers and Rev. Brian Collins officiating. Family and friends will meet 12:15 PM Wednesday at Bridges Funeral Home and proceed to New Corinth Cemetery for a 1:00 PM interment.
Honorary pallbearers: employees at J and F Mechanical. The family would like to thank UT Medical Center Oncology and hospice care givers for their dedication and care. The family will receive friends 4:00-7:00 PM Tuesday at Bridges Funeral Home, 5430 Rutledge Pike.
