Mr. Bernie Birchfield, 85, 109 Raymond Chambers Lane, Roan Mountain peacefully went home to be with the Lord Monday, April 2, 2007 at his residence following an extended illness. Born November 7, 1921 in Tiger Creek, Roan Mountain he was the son of the late John and Martha Stanley Birchfield. He was a retired employee of the Tennessee Valley Authority. Mr. Birchfield was an active horse and wagon master and loved wagon trains. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and during that time was a prisoner of war in Germany for eight months. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, Mr. Birchfield was preceded in death by his first wife, Lou Nell Hill Birchfield; two infant sons and one daughter; a grandson, Gary Farmer; four sisters, Bertha Largent, Hattie Chambers, Bonnie Chambers and Kate Hill and three brothers, Ought Birchfield, Ray Birchfield and Walter Birchfield. Survivors include five daughters, Bernie Sue Birchfield, Elizabethton, Dimple Church, Elizabethton, Maxine Lewis and her husband Steve Lewis, Hampton, Tammy Bowers, Gray and Rachel Birchfield, Elizabethton; his step-children, Joann Willison, Colorado, Billy Brock, Elizabethton and Brenda Harvey, Michigan, several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, his care-giver and companion, Geneva Essick and his second wife, Daisy Estep.
