Retired Birdseye Farmer, Business Man is Dead at 85
John W. Smith, 85, a retired Birdseye farmer and businessman, died at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Hospital in Huntingburg where he had been a patient since last November 9. He formerly operated a feed mill and store at Birdseye.
Mr. Smith was born in Dubois County on November 17, 1997, the soneof Hezekiah and Betsy Waddle Smith. In November of 1903 he was married to Nora Chanley, who preceded him in death on Sept. 25, 1961.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Iva Main of Birdseye and Mrs. Inez Raufeisen of Edinburg, Ind., and eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A daughter, a half-brother and one half-sister preceded him in death.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Christian Church of Birdseye. Friends may call after 7 p.m. today at the Schumutzler Funeral home in Huntingburg, where the funeral service will be held at 2 pm Friday. Interment will follow in Birdseye Cemetery.
